Liberec extended the lease agreement with the technical museum for another ten years

Liberec – The Technical Museum will remain in the premises of the former exhibition grounds in Liberec at least until 2037. The lease for four pavilions was set to expire next year at the end of June, but the city has extended it for another ten years. This was stated to journalists by the Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning, Property, and Sports Adam Lenert (ANO).

"The council decided to continue the contract because the technical museum is fulfilling its role in the given location, and no project for the redevelopment of the area is currently prepared. However, even within the framework of future redevelopment, the valid urban study considers the preservation of part of the museum spaces," the deputy added.

The Technical Museum, operated by local enthusiasts of industry, has been in the unused area of the former exhibition grounds since 2014. Originally located in one pavilion, it has gradually expanded into others. It now practically occupies most of the area of the former exhibition grounds, with around 30,000 people visiting its exhibitions annually. It is dedicated to 20th-century means of transportation, including luxury automotive classics, the cable car to Ještěd, and industrial production.

In the future, the city council plans a partial redevelopment of the former exhibition grounds, which are bounded by the city swimming pool, a secondary industrial school, an intersection known as Zlatý kříž, and Štefánik Square near the barracks. A study has been completed, which considers the preservation of two pavilions for the museum along Masaryk Street and the replacement of the northern pavilions B to D with new buildings primarily for residential purposes. A portion of the locals is against the reduction of the museum; a petition supporting it was signed by over 3,000 people two years ago. "So it is guaranteed by the city council that the museum will be in these premises for at least another ten years," Lenert added.
