Most - The Regional Museum in Most today opened an exhibition titled Architecture in the Service of the First Republic in the Ústí Region. The exhibition presents the development and direction of interwar architecture through selected buildings from the region. The exhibition will run until May 8. This was stated today by the museum spokesperson Eva Hladká in a press release.

The establishment of independent Czechoslovakia coincides with a change in architectural thinking, which can be associated with the national identity of the authors or investors of individual buildings in the current Ústí Region. Architecture influenced by the Czech environment, representing the new republic, penetrated into purely German areas of the region to a limited extent and was almost exclusively linked to state contracts. "The exhibition presents approximately 60 objects built during the interwar period in the Ústí Region. What they have in common is that they were created as a new presentation of the Czechoslovak state in the borderlands. Architecture at that time was one of the important points of how to present democratic ideas," said curator Marta Pavlíková.

The goal of the state was to restart the economy through construction projects, reduce unemployment, and alleviate the impact of the economic and social crisis that struck the Ústí Region after the end of the war to an unprecedented extent. State-funded projects focused primarily on the development of transport infrastructure and engineering networks, the construction of public institutions, healthcare facilities, Czech schools, and social housing. Over twenty years, several highly valuable buildings referencing Czech avant-garde were created in the Ústí Region, as well as structures shaped and inspired by German cultural centers such as Dresden, Berlin, Munich, and the Austrian Vienna.
