Brno - Builders in southern Moravia constructed and started more apartments last year than in 2018. A total of 4,720 completed apartments were recorded, and construction of 4,849 apartments began. The construction offices in the region also issued more building permits than in 2018. This information is derived from data published today by the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO).


The number of completed family houses and apartments increased last year compared to 2018 by 273, resulting in a total of 4,720 apartments, representing a year-on-year growth of 6.1 percent. The South Moravian Region ranked third after Prague and the Central Bohemian Region. Most completed apartments were accounted for by Brno and the Brno-Country district.

A similar situation was observed for constructions that began in 2019. In the region, the construction of 4,849 apartments was initiated, which is 443 more than the previous year, representing an increase of 10.1 percent. The highest number of commenced constructions was in Brno and its surroundings. In comparison among regions, South Moravia ranked third behind Prague and the Central Bohemian Region.

The number of new housing constructions will continue to rise; according to CZSO data, 9,344 building permits were issued last year in the region, which is 695 more than the previous year, indicating an increase of eight percent. This is the second highest number among the regions, following the Central Bohemian Region.

The most building permits, a quarter of the total in the region, were issued in the Brno-Country district, totaling 2,477 permits. "Conversely, the least were issued in the Hodonín district, with 791 permits. A year-on-year decrease in the number of issued building permits in the region was recorded only in the Brno-City district, at a decline of 2.6 percent; in the other districts, there was an increase," stated Veronika Dohnálková from the Brno office of CZSO.

The highest growth in the number of issued building permits occurred in the Znojmo district, with 450 more permits issued year-on-year, representing an increase of 35.2 percent.
