Prague - The National Theatre has announced a competition for the long-planned reconstruction of the façade of its historic building. Information about the competition was published on Monday by the Information System on Public Contracts. The building from the 19th century is expected to undergo repairs for four years. The reconstruction will be divided into four phases and should not restrict the theater's operations in any way. The estimated cost of the contract is 160 million crowns excluding tax, with price being the only criterion for the competition.
"The National Theatre, one of the supreme Czech national cultural monuments, is to be dressed in a new cloak over the next three years. That is good news," said the director of the National Theatre, Ondřej Černý, to ČTK.
The façade reconstruction has been planned for several years. It was preceded by repairs to the roof, railings, and the trig sculpture, which cost 23.5 million crowns and was completed in 2008. Negotiations with the Ministry of Culture regarding the financing of the general renovation started four years ago. "Now we have received instructions that the funds will be released," said Václav Pelouch, the technical and operational director of the ND, to ČTK.
Interested parties are required to submit applications to participate in the competition by April 14, with the first phase of repairs expected to begin this year.
