The largest transport hub, a meeting place, a shopping center, and above all, the gateway to the capital city, that is Prague’s Main Train Station, which will be the destination of the second continuation of the series “The Ugliest Architecture of Prague”. The tour of the station's premises will take place on November 24 at 6 PM, and this time the guide will be architect and architecture promoter Adam Gebrian. The lecture series “The Ugliest Architecture of Prague” started in September 2015. The experts leading the tours aim to present these architecturally controversial buildings in a broader context and reveal their qualities. The event is organized by the artistic platform Scholastika, which will become a higher vocational school in 2016. After the successful first part of the series “The Ugliest Architecture of Prague,” where the participants were guided through the New Stage of the National Theatre by Vladimír 518, we will move from a normalization building to a structure that combines the original Art Nouveau form by architect Josef Fanta, a newer section from the authorial collective: Danda, Bočan, Šrámek, Šrámková, Trnková, Rothbauer from the 1970s, and the current reconstruction. “The Main Train Station is another very discussed building; it has an interesting past and is also a place where thousands of people pass daily. Few of them have the time to stop and reflect on the architecture of the Main Train Station for a moment, which is why we want to present it to the general public from a slightly different perspective,” explains Evžen Šimera, director of the higher vocational school Scholastika and artist. The current building of the Main Train Station consists of several parts, including Fanta's building (1901-09) and the hall above the tracks, which are among immovable cultural monuments. Additionally, there is the check-in hall (1972–1979), which was created based on an architectural competition from the early 1970s. The authors of the new building are Josef Danda, Jan Bočan, Julie Trnková, Zdeněk Rothbauer, and Alena and Jan Šrámkoví. These two objects and their ongoing reconstruction will be the subject of the tour intended for the general public. “In the hall above the tracks, there is a large-scale replacement of individual structural parts. Our tour will probably be one of the last opportunities to see the highest steel structure of its time in its original condition,” says architect and architecture theorist Adam Gebrian, who will guide through the Main Train Station. Instead of pursuing his own architectural practice, Gebrian decided to become an architecture promoter. For his tireless publishing and discussion activities, which have increased awareness of architectural culture in public spaces, he received the title Architect of the Year in 2015. The tour will also include a slide show presentation on the history, present, and future of the Main Train Station, prepared by architect Petr Kučera. The lecture series “The Ugliest Architecture of Prague” was introduced as a new project by the platform Scholastika, which has been organizing and presenting various forms of contemporary art to the public for more than three years. Its aim is to offer opportunities to collaborate with respected personalities of the artistic environment in fine arts, design, architecture, fashion, or applied arts and to contribute to the positive transformation of our society in relation to art. The tour of the Main Train Station with commentary by Adam Gebrian will take place on November 24, 2015, at 6 PM. The meeting will take place in front of the main building, directly under the Main Train Station sign at 5:45 PM. Capacity is limited, so it is necessary to reserve places in advance. The presentation in the space of the Main Train Station is made possible through cooperation with Czech Railways and the company Grandi Stazioni. Admission to the event is free.
