Ostrava – Ostrava has completed an extensive renovation of Domov Korýtko, which serves seniors as well as clients with various forms of dementia. The renovation cost 517.5 million crowns excluding VAT. The facility will accommodate 254 clients. This was stated to journalists today by Mayor Jan Dohnal (Spolu).
"During the month of May, we plan to relocate our 144 existing clients from temporary premises to the new Korýtko. From the middle of 2026, we will gradually start accepting new clients, especially for the home with special conditions," said the director of the home, Jan Seidler. Out of the total capacity, 130 beds will be allocated for the senior home service and 124 beds for the home with special conditions. The facility will thus be able to accept an additional 22 applicants for the senior home and 88 people for the home with special conditions.
The renovation of the building from the 1980s began in 2022. According to Deputy Mayor Břetislav Riger (Ostravak), it was quite complex, and the builders had to deal with a number of complications. Instead of the originally planned 20 months, it ultimately took 44 months. "Elements were found that the project did not account for, as they were not recorded in the original documentation from 1979 and were also not detected during the surveys conducted while processing the new project documentation," explained Riger.
During the modernization, the internal layouts of accommodation buildings B and C were adjusted, new terraces were added, and workshops and rehabilitation facilities were created in the basement of building B. "Operating building A has a new extension with social halls, a kitchen, laundry operations, and all the necessary facilities for employees. The buildings are insulated and have a new facade," Dohnal said.
The facility offers 50 single and 102 double rooms. The city will also finish outdoor modifications on the premises. The garden plans include the construction of outdoor pergolas and raised flower beds. There will also be additional greenery and lighting, and the home will have new fencing.
Domov Korýtko also plans to increase the number of employees. Some positions have already been filled, but the home is expected to hire a total of 72 new employees. By the end of this year, a total of 213 people should care for the clients.
Currently, there are eight homes for seniors in Ostrava, operated by the city of Ostrava. Their capacity is 1,482 beds, of which 949 are for the senior home service and 533 for the home with special conditions. Other facilities are operated in the city by non-profit organizations or private operators. However, even so, the capacity is inadequate, and the city plans to construct additional facilities.
