Brno - Instead of a parking lot with barriers, a parking garage will be built in two years between the Brno streets Křenová, Vlhká, and Skořepka. The construction, which will accommodate 226 cars, was initiated today by the municipal company Brněnské komunikace with the laying of the foundation stone. The new parking capacity will help reduce the circulation of vehicles searching for free spots in the streets, which will lead to smoother traffic, said the councilor for transport, Petr Kratochvíl (ODS). The costs reach nearly 120 million crowns, of which 42 million is to be covered by a grant.
The original parking lot at Skořepka has proven to be insufficient over time. Once completed, there will be more than four times the previous number of spots in the area. "The plan includes the preparation of five spaces for electric vehicles, and there will also be spots for CNG/LPG vehicles on the roof, and we are also considering a space for bicycles," said the chairman of the board of Brněnské komunikace, David Grund (ODS).
The five-story corner building with a flat roof is designed with regard to the efficient use of space in an area with limited construction space. "The design of the appearance and integration with the surrounding buildings corresponds to the architectural character of the area and also meets the safety and functionality standards. The building will have a trapezoidal floor plan and a facade combining vertical and horizontal lines. It will be a monolithic structure with stainless steel mesh between the columns. On the western side, there will be stairwell tubes with elevators, and on the eastern side, there will be a ramp," said Vilém Huryta, director of the company Firesta Fišer, reconstruction, construction.
Brněnské komunikace has been operating the Pinki park in Kopečná Street since 2014, with 88 spots; two years later, drivers began using Domini Park in Husova Street, which has 367 spaces. In 2021, River Park was added in Polní Street, offering 110 spots. The new Academy Park near Šumavská Street, with an indoor and outdoor capacity of 595 spots, is expected to open by the summer holidays.
"Together with the Janáček Cultural Center, the underground garages at the new square of Ludvík Kundera will be operational at the turn of 2027 and 2028. Since 2014, this means nearly 1,600 spots. This is truly a significant contribution to transportation infrastructure, development of urban mobility, and relief for public spaces," said Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS). The city is also preparing additional parking garages near the Bohunice campus and on Žlutý kopec.
