Brno - Cars that park in Zelný trh in the center of Brno will be moved underground. Brno city councilors approved a study for the future renovation of the square, which includes underground parking. The parking lot for 80 vehicles will be intended mainly for residents living in the square and hotel guests. This was announced today by the mayor's deputy Martin Ander (SZ). The parking lot will be built by a private investor, simultaneously with the reconstruction of the square planned by the city. Although the underground under Zelný trh is interwoven with a network of historical cellars and corridors, a parking lot can fit there. Experts calculated that one level of underground garages can be built in the strip between the ceilings of the corridors and the level of the square, Ander said. Zelný trh is one of the central squares in Brno. It is known for its fruit and vegetable market, which has been held for 700 years. According to Ander, the stall sales of produce will be preserved, and the offer of local foods will be further expanded. In the building that the city owns in the square, currently used by traders, a shop for regional products should be established. It should offer cheeses, dairy products, meat, and wine. "Local food products that cannot be sold in the square for hygiene reasons,” the deputy added. The overall renovation of the square should begin in two years; so far, only the architectural study is complete. Following this, contracts for documentation for the zoning process and building permits will be issued. The costs of the repairs will also be calculated later. The city hall plans to renovate the historical fountain in the square, but its restoration will be commissioned in a separate contract.
