Prague - The Prague councilors are proposing honorary citizenships for conductor Jiří Bělohlávek, architect Karel Hubáček, and artists Karel Malich and Adriena Johnová. The proposal, which was approved by the council today, still needs to be approved by the city assembly. The capital has been granting honorary citizenships as a tribute since 1920.
Honorary citizenship should also be awarded to two artists - Karel Malich and posthumously to Adriena Johnová. Johnová, born Šimotová, was a prominent representative of the 1960s generation and passed away two years ago. The typical materials she used in her work, described as meditative, were white handmade paper, tracing paper, and japon, which she layered, tore, crumpled, and created reliefs and frottages, or impressions.
The unique sculptor, painter, graphic artist, and creator of typical wire sculptures, Malich was born on October 18, 1924. He also creates collages and reliefs. He has an affinity for unusual artistic materials, such as wires, as well as for colors in bright and vibrant pastels. A pioneer of abstract art, he engaged in landscape painting, sculpture, working with plexiglass, working with wires, and pastel drawing throughout his artistic life.
