Prague - The Prague magistrate has begun addressing the proposal to change the zoning plan that would allow the construction of a tram line from Vinohradská Street across Wenceslas Square to the main railway station. Ondřej Boháč, the director of the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), said this today to ČTK. Three route options are being considered. Officials are currently reviewing the proposal. The change could be completed within months and would allow the magistrate to potentially build the line in the future. There has been talk of returning trams to the square for years, but no decision has been made yet. Trams stopped running here in 1980.
According to the first option, trams from Vinohradská would travel between the National Museum and the former Federal Assembly (now the new building of the National Museum), turning onto Wilson Street towards the State Opera. A stop would be created here. Subsequently, the track would curve across the main road into the park and head toward the station, where there would be a second new stop. From the station building, it would follow the main road to the corner of Bolzanova and U Bulhara, where it would connect to the current line.
The second option is that the tracks would lead to the opera along the same route as in the first option, but then instead of heading towards the station building, they would go into Opletalova Street and further to the intersection of Opletalova and Bolzanova leading to the current track. The last option proposes to lead the line from Vinohradská to Wenceslas Square and then from there into Opletalova Street and further to Bolzanova.
Which of the three options will be selected has not yet been decided. During the proceedings, one of the proposals could be excluded. Likewise, all three could be approved. According to Boháč, IPR prefers the first option.
Officials must address any comments, including those from the Prague 1 city hall. The change will also be discussed by the Prague city council, the magistrate committee for spatial development, and the final decision will be made by the representatives.
