Reconstruction of the upper part of Wenceslas Square in Prague will begin in June

Prague - The reconstruction of the upper part of Wenceslas Square in Prague, associated with the construction of a tram line from the National Museum, will begin this June. This was announced today by Daniel Šabík, head of the press department of the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP). The DPP is currently working on the precise schedule of work with the construction company Eurovia CS, which was selected through a competition. The work will take three years and will cost approximately 1.24 billion crowns excluding VAT, according to the results of the tender.

"Currently, necessary administrative and procedural steps are being taken to initiate construction, particularly coordination and ensuring transportation measures. We expect construction to begin this June," Šabík stated.

In addition to the construction of the tram line, which will connect the tracks in Vinohradská with those in Vodičkova and Jindřišská streets, the project will also include related adjustments to the roadways and sidewalks, repair of the ceiling slabs of the underpass at the Museum metro station, construction of a retention tank for rainwater to water the trees, and rerouting of utilities.

According to Šabík, the metro operation will not be affected by the work. "The construction work on the repair of the ceiling slabs above the vestibule of the Museum station will proceed without disrupting the metro operation at the station. In other words, the station will remain accessible to passengers throughout the construction period," he stated.

Trams operated at the upper part of the square until 1980, and the previous city leadership decided on their return. Compared to the original state, there will be promenades on the sides of the square and in the middle, according to earlier information. The city also plans to reduce car traffic on the square, which will run partly on tram tracks.

Wenceslas Square is 682 meters long and approximately 60 meters wide. In 2020, the reconstruction of the lower part of the square began, which the city mostly completed last autumn. Subsequently, work continued on two smaller areas near the tracks from Jindřišská to Vodičkova street, which were already preparatory work for the construction of the tram line in the upper part.
