Brno - Builders completed 1668 apartments in southern Moravia in the first half of this year. This is 370 fewer than in the first six months of last year. This is evident from the information published today by the Brno branch of the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ). The number of building permits issued also decreased compared to last year.

The completed construction in the first half of the year in the region fell by 18.2 percent. The region accounted for 11.2 percent of the total number of completed apartments in the entire country, ranking third highest among the regions. South Moravian Region, along with Prague, is the only area where the year-on-year completed residential construction has decreased.

The number of apartments for which construction began in the first half of the year increased compared to 2017, but only by 0.5 percent. Construction companies started building 1998 apartments, which is the second highest number among the regions, just behind the Central Bohemian Region. The largest share of initiated apartments was in family houses, 54.5 percent, while apartments in new apartment buildings comprised 20.2 percent.

In the first half of this year, the number of building permits also decreased year-on-year. Authorities issued 4211 permits in the region, which is 303 fewer permits, or 6.7 percent less. Fewer building permits were issued than last year in six other regions, namely in Prague, Plzeň, Karlovy Vary, Pardubice, Olomouc, and Zlín regions.

The estimated value of the constructions for which building permits were issued in the first half of the year decreased in the region by 2.3 billion crowns to 16.6 billion.
