Topic: Tensegrity - Design Principle and Spatial Models
Date: October 31, 2014, from 15:00 to 19:00hours
Motto: It is possible to connect a structure made of rods and cables so that the rods do not touch each other. They levitate in the air solely on the cables.
In 2012, in collaboration with the studio e-MRAK (now HAMR - Martin Rajniš Architecture Forge), we realized a tensegrity dome as a public fire pit in the area of the Bára lookout tower in Podhůra near Chrudim. We chose a closed model of a dodecahedron, which we modified for our needs. Tensegrity structures, however, allow for almost infinite spatial variants and arrangements. The basic principle is simple - just rods and cables without complex spatial joints. Conversely, the spatial expansion of the structure, in which everything is interconnected, is challenging for the imagination.
From our own experience, we know that the hardest part is the first "feeling out" of the way to create the structure. Thus, we decided to prepare an afternoon workshop directly in the lapidarium space, to familiarize participants with the construction and spatial development of tensegrities and to allow everyone to independently experiment with tensegrity models.
The workshop will be divided into three phases: an introductory presentation of experimental constructions, particularly experiences with the tensegrity dome in Chrudim, followed by the theory of tensegrities, and finally the independent creation of models.
We would appreciate it if workshop participants installed their pieces in a favorite location, preferably in a public space, and shared photographs of the models on social media. This way, the reach of the workshop and awareness of tensegrity constructions can expand much further than the organization of the event allows.
Material - 15 cm plywood sticks, and elastic bands will be available on-site. The workshop and entry to the Nahraj! exhibition are free for participants. The number of participants is limited - ideally 30, maximum 50 people from among students and the public. Registration via email: martin.kloda@gmail.com
The Nahraj! exhibition - an event and experiment in Czech architecture was created with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. The exhibition is organized by the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery, ARCHWERK studio, and the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University. More information >
