Aš – In Aš in the Cheb region, builders are completing the modifications of the Park of History. The town hall wants to turn the area, which once housed a cemetery, into a memorial as well as a relaxation spot. The work, costing approximately 60 million crowns, included land adjustments, the construction of paths, and the renovation of the oldest stone bridge in the city. The project is set to continue next year, Aš Mayor Dalibor Blažek (Local) told reporters today.
Construction work in the historic part of the city began at the end of last year. The construction company carried out land and landscaping adjustments and also renovated the oldest structure in the city, a stone bridge from 1724. The park features new walkways and furniture. Currently, the company is finishing the construction of a suspended footbridge.
On the site of the current park once stood an evangelical cemetery. However, during the previous regime, excavators destroyed the cemetery, and a tennis complex was built in its place. "It was very insensitive, so we want to design the park as a memorial site to commemorate the past," said Blažek. Archaeologists supervised the work as they conducted research there.
During land adjustments on the three-hectare area, they encountered old graves, human remains, and the remains of buildings. They also discovered historical cellars up to 30 meters long. The town had them cleaned for one million crowns, and static surveys are now planned for these sites. In the future, they want to utilize them for various cultural events.
The town hall divided the park modifications into three parts, which are planned to take about two years. The first part, which is now being completed, involves construction work. The second part is a virtual educational trail, which is currently being designed and which the town wants to complete by the end of next year. The third part is the construction of a children's playground for 14 million crowns, which will take place next summer.
The Park of History project was created thanks to the long-term cooperation of Aš with neighboring Bavaria and especially nearby Selb. Aš, with approximately 13,000 inhabitants, received a grant of 1.5 million euros (around 38 million crowns) from the cross-border program for the park modifications.
