Ostrava – A new bridge designed by architect Roman Koucký will replace the bridge over the Ostravice River in the Karolina area. The city expects it to become another landmark of the regional capital. Deputy Mayor Zuzana Bajgarová (ANO) announced this to journalists today. The bridge will consist of symmetrical but mirror-reversed structures. It will be constructed from patinating steel, which requires no maintenance, and also from glass. The design phase will take about two more years, followed by another two years for the actual construction, so it could be completed in 2025. The costs for the demolition and construction of the bridge are expected to be around 200 million crowns (excluding VAT).

The bridge at Karolina is in unsatisfactory technical condition. Although it is owned by the region, it is located in a part of the city that is significantly developing. New buildings for the University of Ostrava, for example, are being erected there. Therefore, the city has agreed with the region to have the new bridge built, and the region will contribute to its financing. According to Bajgarová, the agreement still needs to be approved by the authorities of both the city and the region.

"Of all 1135 bridges managed by the Moravian-Silesian Region, more than half are in good or even perfect condition. However, about a fifth of them are in a state that requires repair, including the bridge over the Ostravice River in the center of Ostrava," said Deputy Governor for Transport Radek Podstawka (ANO), who welcomed Ostrava's involvement in the reconstruction.

The bridge will be 100 meters long and 17 meters wide, divided into three separate sections. In the middle, there will be a two-lane roadway, and on the cantilevers on the sides, there will be two sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists. "Bridges have a special status among buildings. Regardless of the era in which they were built, they have always represented the pinnacle of technical possibilities and the skills of their builders. Often, cities themselves are characterized by their bridges," believes Koucký. He reminded that the new bridge will connect two parts of Ostrava – Moravian and Silesian. "Each has a different character. To make the new bridge a symbol of their meeting, each has the same part of the asymmetrical supporting structure of the bridge, which symbolically meets above the river," the architect added.

Koucký has been designing bridges for many years. Among his most famous works are the Troja Bridge in Prague and the Mariánský Bridge in Ústí nad Labem.
