Semily - In Semily, the railway station building is being reconstructed. The reconstruction of the roof and interiors will cost the Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC) 35 million crowns. In the future, there are also plans to repair the tracks, which, however, is not part of this project. This was stated today by SŽDC spokesman Marek Illiaš. The town hall wants to create a transport hub near the station and plans to relocate the bus station there as well. The renovated building should then serve as a facility not only for railway passengers but also for bus passengers. "The station building will receive a new roof, engineering networks, interior renovation, and new restrooms inside. The old ones will be demolished," Illiaš added. This is not the first similar reconstruction in the region. Recently, the administration completed the second phase of the reconstruction of the station in Turnov in the Semily region. That phase was somewhat cheaper, costing 30 million crowns. However, a third phase of the Turnov station renovation is still planned. "The commencement is tentatively expected in 2020," said Tomáš Drmola, the deputy director general of SŽDC.
The reconstruction of the railway station in Semily aims to take advantage of the opportunity. "We have already received consent from SŽDC that we can relocate the bus station next to the railway one, and we will begin coordinating with the Liberec region, as after relocating the bus station, it will be possible to complete the thoroughfare through the town," said Semily mayor Lena Mlejnková (Choice for Semily) to ČTK. According to her, the condition for relocating the bus station is the reconstruction of the track, which is being prepared. The costs are estimated at around 120 million crowns.
The construction of the thoroughfare, which will divert traffic from the town and ease car transit, has been planned in Semily for years. Last year, the Liberec region began reconstructing two key intersections into roundabouts, which should be followed by the construction of the thoroughfare itself, which will pass through the current bus station, among other things. However, the project has thus far been stalled by the acquisition of some plots of land. "Recently, we managed to reach an agreement with the owner to exchange a key plot for another one, so only minor details remain to be resolved, which the Liberec region has promised to handle, as it will be the investor for the thoroughfare," Mlejnková added.
