Prague - In the final of the Architect of the Year 2021 award, there are four creators or studios. The expert jury selected architects who, in the past five years, have significantly contributed to architecture in the Czech Republic through their approach. The ceremonial announcement of the results of the 13th edition of the competition will take place on September 21 at the FOR Arch fair in Letňany. The finalists are Kuba & Pilař architects, Petr Janda, David Kraus, and Petr Stolín. ČTK informed about this on behalf of the organizers Markéta Pražanová.
The aim of the Architect of the Year award is to spread awareness and promote quality architecture. The award also draws attention to the significance and importance of architecture for life and the cultural development of society. Its goal is to recognize a significant achievement from the last five years.
"The award is primarily intended for practicing architects, but not exclusively. Anyone who strives for a pleasant living space through their actions can become a laureate," said Zdeněk Fránek, last year's laureate of the award and current juror. Along with him, the ten nominations were decided by other winners from previous years of the competition – architects Stanislav Fiala, Petr Hájek, Marcela Steinbachová, and artist Kateřina Šedá.
Ladislav Kuba and Tomáš Pilař are, according to the jury, stalwarts of the Czech architectural scene. "They embody minimalist principles while achieving diverse, artistically successful forms that they continually develop. Their repeatedly awarded work is of high quality, elaborated in detail, and respects context," the jury believes. The studio's work includes sacred buildings, memorials, family and apartment houses, residential complexes, as well as school buildings or shopping centers. Five of their constructions have been nominated for the European Mies van der Rohe Award for Architecture, and they have won the Grand Prix of Architects nine times.
In the case of Petr Janda, the jury appreciates the artistic aspect of his works, which combine experience from studying at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University and the Academy of Fine Arts. This was most recently demonstrated in his realization of the Prague embankments, which he will continue to work on in the future and which has attracted interest from foreign media. In addition to the adjustments of the docks at Rašín, Hořejším, and Dvořák's embankments, the jury mentions his Lazy House in Zlín, Regula Penthouse in Prague, victory in an international competition for the Visitor Center of the Flamingo Reserve in Abu Dhabi, and the design of the Floating Pool for Rašín's embankment in Prague.
David Kraus is a prominent Czech architect and teacher of the middle generation, the jury stated. In 2018, he won the Czech Architecture Award for the administrative building of a concrete company near the village of Strančice in the Prague-East district. As a teacher, he worked at the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design and the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University. He has realized dozens of distinctive family houses and other constructions. He lectures, works as an educator, publishes, and holds several awards.
Stolín and his colleague Alena Mičeková are, according to the jury, a team whose quality of work stands up to the best international productions. He has repeatedly won the main prize in the Czech Architecture Award competition. His buildings of his own house and studio, ZEN-houses, have brought a very friendly impulse to the Czech landscape: unpretentious, modest, inexpensive, and yet astonishingly appealing organized objects, one for living and the other for creating, the jury believes.
