Vimperk ceremoniously opened the reconstructed Brewery Terraces

Vimperk - Vimperk in the Prachatice region today officially opened the reconstructed Brewery Terraces. The town repaired an area that had been abandoned for more than two decades and was falling into disrepair. The costs of the reconstruction amounted to 28 million crowns. The mayor of Vimperk, Jaroslava Martanová (STAN), told ČTK.

"We actually have a new wonderful space, where in previous years trash just piled up and people went there to walk their dogs. We have gained beautiful greenery close to the city center,” said the mayor. The city opened the terraces on the occasion of the Friendship Festival, which from Friday commemorates over twenty years of partnership with the German town of Freyung. Both partner cities are similar in population and are separated by a distance of just under 50 kilometers. They are also connected by a shared history. After World War II, many displaced German residents of Vimperk moved to Freyung among other places.

"Thanks to this partnership, the Brewery Terraces have transformed from a overgrown wilderness with crumbling walls into a modern public space for relaxation and hosting smaller social events in the open air. The revitalization of the Brewery Terraces is part of the project 'Touristic Development of Attractions in the Bavarian-Czech Border Region' and is co-financed by the European Union. Moreover, both cities are connected by a new tourist route called ArchitekTúra, which highlights small architectural monuments in the Šumava and Bavarian Forest landscape,” Martanová stated.

The Brewery Terraces were originally established by the Schwarzenbergs as orchards. Later they served for gardening, but then fell into disrepair and became overgrown with wild trees. In 2019, a proposal for the modification and pruning of the greenery won in Vimperk's participatory budget. Citizens in the following year’s participatory budget requested further modifications.

From the terraces, there is a view of the Renaissance castle in Vimperk. After the reconstruction, the city intends to hold cultural and social events there.
