Bystřice pod Hostýnem - The furniture manufacturer TON from Bystřice pod Hostýnem in Kroměříž region has received the prestigious Red Dot Award 2019 for the design of its lounge chair Chips. The model is designed by Czech designer Lucie Koldová. The chair caught the jury's attention in the product design category. This was announced today in a press release by company representative Magdaléna Řiháková.
A few days ago, the chair was also named the winning product in the Furniture of the Year 2019 poll. In a relatively short period of existence, it has garnered additional awards. These include the Designer of the Year award from the Ministry of Culture, victories in the German Design Award 2019, Good Design 2018, and the Editors' Choice Award at Designblok 2018 for the best new product.
The Chips chair features an airy backrest, which at its lower part forms one of the three bases. In contrast, it is complemented by a massive seat with pocket springs and PUR foam, held by molded plywood. Besides its shape, its manufacturing process is also interesting, utilizing the technology of manual wood bending, which has been used in Bystřice pod Hostýnem since the 1860s. "From the beginning, I wanted the product to have soft curves. A lounge chair should look comfortable from the very first glance," Koldová stated earlier.
TON will again showcase the Chips chair to the public at the Salone del Mobile design and furniture fair in Milan, Italy, taking place from April 9 to 14. They will also present the new Ginger chair from the Spanish studio Yonoh. Visitors will be able to see new coffee tables YYY, a dining chair from the Leaf collection, and bar stool number 813 from the company's range at the event.
The Red Dot Award for design is awarded in three main categories - design concept, communication design, and product design. TON has previously received the award for the Merano chair, chairs from the Alba and Split collections, as well as for the chair and table from the Leaf collection. Last year, the company’s promotional materials, specifically collections of catalogs and material samples, received the Red Dot Award.
TON is one of the few manufacturers of bent furniture in the world. The company's tradition dates back to 1861 when carpenter, inventor, and furniture designer Michael Thonet founded his company. The company employs about 860 people and supplies its products to 60 countries. In 2017, it reported sales of its own products, services, and goods amounting to 845.2 million crowns and achieved a profit of 43.6 million crowns. The economic results for the last year have not yet been disclosed by the company.
