JIHLAVA - The Vysočina Region has contributed for the fourth time this year with one million crowns to three towns in the region with monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Just these days, the money is being sent to the accounts of the municipalities in Telč in Jihlava District, Žďár nad Sázavou, and Třebíč. Vysočina is the region with the largest number of such monuments in the Czech Republic. "The region uses this fact for its promotion, but on the other hand, the towns have faced a number of obligations related to the protection of these monuments," said the region's spokesperson Jitka Svatošová today to ČTK. Telč will use the million crowns from the region to co-finance the repaving of the thoroughfare through Zachariáš z Hradce Square in the city center. The construction will cost around seven million crowns. In addition to regional funds, most of the costs will be covered by a grant from the Phare program, with the remainder covered by the city from its own budget. "Construction will start immediately, as soon as the weather allows, everything must be completed by the end of June," said Deputy Mayor Hana Müllerová. In Třebíč, in previous years, the regional grant was used for the acquisition of an information system and for repairs of some buildings in the Jewish quarter. This year, the municipality will use the grant for repairing information boards with descriptions of the monuments and for replacing benches and trash bins in the Jewish quarter. Part of the grant will, according to spokesperson Ivan Přibík, be used for further promotional materials. Žďár nad Sázavou will contribute the region's funds similarly to previous years for financing the repairs of the pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk on Zelená Hora. "We will continue with repairs and construction of sidewalks and tree removal in the area," said Petr Fuksa from the cultural department. The work will cost around three million crowns this year, with the rest covered by the municipality from its own budget. Outdoor modifications of the area at Zelená Hora are the main task of the Žďár municipality for this electoral period. According to Governor Miloš Vystrčil, Vysočina is probably the only region in the Czech Republic that regularly supports towns with UNESCO monuments in this way.
