Žatec - The Žatec theatre could undergo extensive reconstruction, which would again reveal some valuable elements in the historical building that were covered by a rough intervention from the 1960s. The modern extension from this period should be demolished and replaced with a new building, according to the latest study. The study was presented for the first time today to the Žatec councilors by its author, architect Ondřej Tuček. However, the city will decide later whether the preparation for the theatre's reconstruction will continue.
"Some valuable elements have disappeared over time during interventions on the historic building. The murals are hidden under layers of paint, but they are restorable. We would like to reconstruct the historical part of the theatre in a very gentle, heritage-friendly manner. We want to return it to its original appearance," Tuček described. The oldest building of the Žatec city theatre will celebrate its 170th anniversary this year and is one of the most valuable monuments in Žatec.
A completely different fate would await the youngest extension, which was created during the last reconstruction of the theatre between 1960 and 1969. According to the study, this part of the theatre should be removed and replaced with a new building that will better suit the space in which the theatre stands. "The new building would better address operational matters, such as barrier-free access to the theatre, wardrobe and social facilities, ensuring service areas, and creating a dignified café," Tuček described. The surrounding area should also be adjusted to enable better supply access to the theatre and accommodate larger vehicles.
The adjustments should also concern the building with the number 30, which the theatre currently partially uses for storage. Offices should be established on its ground floor, while the upper part of the building should be used by the city for housing tenants such as actors or other performers during seasonal events. The currently inaccessible garden on the city walls could also be opened during the reconstruction. According to the theatre's director, Martin Veselý, the reconstruction could also reduce the theatre's operating costs.
The city should now decide whether to have project documentation prepared or wait for the opportunity to utilize a grant title. According to the study, the reconstruction could also be carried out gradually, in several phases.
