After a year-long break, a series of lectures on architecture returns to Zlín, prepared and organized by the civic association aArchitektura in collaboration with café Blok 12.
Architecture as a theme is key for Zlín. The city, as we know it today, is a product of top architects, placing it in the realm of a unique phenomenon with international significance. Are the residents of the city aware of this? In what ways can this heritage be remembered, how to perceive public space, and what role does architecture have and can have in the lives of residents? The aim of the aArchitektura lectures is to draw attention to the profession that shapes the place for living, to present creative approaches and personalities who practice their profession responsibly, and this is evident in their results.
The first presenter will be the A69 studio, introduced by two founding members, Jaroslav Wertig and Prokop Tomášek. A69 belongs to the generation of architects who started their practice after 1989, experiencing the construction boom and the current downturn, relocating from Cheb to Prague. The architects have in their portfolio both small buildings and large residential complexes, collaborations with developers and private investors, along with numerous awards. A69’s projects have one evident characteristic, the courage and confidence that lead to unconventional responses to the briefs. This is especially visible in smaller objects, such as the Eggo and Plot and Lea houses. Their concepts deviate from established schemes and bring many spatial qualities to the houses for their inhabitants. Come and see for yourself on March 8, 2012, at 7 p.m. at café Blok 12.
The lecture does not end the evening, as architect Prokop Tomášek is also the frontman of the band Abigail Ybarra, which will make its premiere performance for the Zlín audience. Abigail Ybarra is one of the recognized formations in its genre - blues rock. The introverted musical style of blues merges with the opposite approach - extroverted rock music. The group, named after the woman who winds pickups at the American branch of Fender Company, does not abandon its blues roots, but rather loosely combines them with the wildness and improvisation of rock.
