For us, sustainability means a comprehensive change. It is not only about progressive technologies, but also significantly about social and cultural issues. We see a particular opportunity for Europe in this, as complex thinking and acting in contexts has long been a well-established tradition here. The success and uniqueness of the European city lies in this and in its ability to transform. Sustainable architecture achieves more than just satisfying known basic needs. In the context of the city, it is always a balanced tool for managing social processes and development. Peter Riepl (*1952) studied at the University of Innsbruck and has been running a joint workshop in Linz with Gabriele Riepl since 1985. As a visiting professor, he has worked at universities in Kassel, Munich, Coburg, Darmstadt, and also on the council of architects of the Federal Real Estate Company in Passau and Salzburg. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Upper Austrian Award for Timber Construction (OÖ Holzbaupreis) in 2009 and the Builder’s Award (Bauherrenpreis) from the Central Association of Austrian Architects in 1990, 1998, 2001, and 2003. The range of ambitious projects by the architectural office Riepl Riepl Architekten encompasses public buildings, cultural facilities, industrial and residential buildings, as well as churches. Peter and Gabriele Riepl focus primarily on the modification and differentiation of space and the reconversion (repurposing of buildings for new purposes).
