How has community housing developed in Germany? Can we design and build today with future generations in mind? Architects and founders of the award-winning German studio IFUB*, Bernhard Kurz and Johannes Krohne, will discuss their approach to architecture and design. The lecture Building Together, Building Better will take place on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Světozor cinema. The expert introduction will be led by journalist and editor-in-chief of EARCH.CZ, Karolína Vránková. Following the lecture, there will be a screening of the film Women of the Bauhaus at 9:00 PM. The documentary pays tribute to the forgotten women of the Bauhaus and showcases their influence on the cradle of modern architecture.
The IFUB* studio has been addressing the issue of housing since its inception. Their projects are designed to be ecological, modest, and considerate of future generations. They actively work with the Baugruppe model (building group), where several acquaintances combine their forces and finances to build an apartment house together. Baugruppe combines private ownership with the advantages of housing cooperatives and actively involves future residents in the entire process. The founders will point out not only the advantages of the model but also the challenges faced in Germany through the implementation of Baugruppe D2 in Berlin. In the Angler-Heimeran district of Munich, they will present the potential of state housing associations. Several architectural firms, in collaboration with IFUB*, are set to reconstruct and expand six buildings and three courtyards, creating affordable housing and strengthening the community character of the area in the most sustainable possible way.
“German metropolises, especially Berlin, are not afraid to test new housing models. Here, we find unusual typologies, new ownership models, and innovative uses of space and materials,” says journalist Karolína Vránková, who has been closely observing the situation in Berlin as part of her work. “In the Czech Republic, essentially nothing new is being tried in the field of housing. It wouldn't hurt to be a bit inspired by German courage.”
“Architecture and interior architecture are here to serve people. We want to design spaces for happy and healthy users while keeping our environmental impact as low as possible. Something as lasting and influential as architecture should never be ‘waste’.” From the IFUB* interview for the portal Kontextur (kntxtr).
IFUB* Studio was founded by architects Johannes Krohne and Bernhard Kurz in 2012. Their work has received numerous awards, including the Heinze Architektur Award 2025 and the Goldenes Haus 2021 award. Both founders are graduates of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and members of the Chamber of Architects. Johannes Krohne studied, among other places, at TU Delft. He specializes in developing new concepts and typologies, focusing on modesty and flexibility in housing. Bernhard Kurz, who interned at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design during his studies, focuses on existing developments and heritage preservation and has also recently engaged in circular construction.
