Lecture by Radim Václavík on the design of roofing for family homes. The advantages and disadvantages of sloping and flat roofs will be presented using realized family homes. Builders and their architects often ask the question of which roof is the right one when designing family homes.
The shape of roofs has been primarily determined by available building materials and craftsmanship skills since ancient times. How should we respond to this "inherited" state today, when our possibilities are (almost) unlimited and technology can solve previous limitations in sophisticated ways that have held traditional forms for centuries?
Not only roofs are becoming a design question, if not extravagance; their appearance is often dictated by many other influences than just functionality proven by time. We have new technologies, but the question remains about their longevity and rate of failure, especially in relation to their cost. Modern times have lost direct contact with nature, and we forget that the "system" is still vulnerable. For example, flash floods take homes today as quickly as they did a hundred years ago. However, "back then," they could rebuild a new house faster and cheaper than we can today. They did not need specialized companies, and many tasks could be done themselves with the help of a local carpenter and mason.
How we cope with these temptations in our studio is the subject of the lecture.
