On Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at 5:30 PM, there will be a debate on the topic "The Role of the Architectural Elite in the Czech Space" at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, Jan Palach Square 2, featuring Jakub Cigler, Pavol Frič, Václav Němec, Michal Stehlík, and Jaroslav Wertig.
The impetus for this discussion has been developing for some time based on the observation of the activities and professional behavior of elite architects, not only in the context of architectural realizations but also in the theoretical realm of urban planning and participation in architectural competitions. Many actions taken by elite figures are perceived negatively on a societal level, while positive actions are often unacknowledged or unknown. A significant inspiration for this debate was the process aimed at demolishing a notable piece of Brussels-style architecture, the train station in Havířov, where leading Czech experts from various fields and with different opinions, professors and deans (the elites?) agreed and demanded the preservation of this object from the Minister of Culture. The elite was not heard. This discussion of architects involves the real position of the Czech elite and its true definition.
