In the municipality of Hohenems in the Dornbirn district of Austria, an architectural gem has emerged, captivating with its impressive and timeless facade in a shade of bronze metallic. A curiosity is that the owner, who is also a roofer, opted for a bonded version of the facade elements only.

Attractive architectural structures are created as a result of harmonious cooperation between the investor, architect, and construction company. A good example of this is the house in Hohenems, which was built after four years of construction. Investor Marc Aberer, who participated in the facade work with his company, had a very clear vision of the final result from the very beginning. It was to be modern architecture that would harmoniously blend into the surrounding environment.

Several factors influenced the choice of suitable materials. “First of all, we were concerned with the design aspect, that is, the appearance of the building. Additionally, we had to consider weather resistance and our goal was also easy installation and, of course, subsequent maintenance-free operation, which ultimately decided. It was astonishing for me that I did not need so many employees for the actual installation of the roof and facade. Usually, I work on the site with four workers, but this time I needed only two,” specifies Marc Aberer.

Reynobond Facade Panels
For a facade measuring 400 m2, in the shade of bronze metallic, extending to the gable of the roof, the choice fell on Reynobond aluminum composite panels. “Reynobond composite panels are one of the most versatile products available. Their application possibilities are nearly endless – from large-scale facade and roof constructions to balconies and tunnel cladding, to the use of sandwich panels as infill for exterior walls. However, Reynobond is most commonly used for ventilated facades, just like in this case of the family house in Hohenems,” describes Kronthaler. The dimensions of the panels had to be adjusted to 1500 x 3645 mm. High rigidity and individual moldability convinced investor Marc Aberer: “In addition to the lightness of the sheets, their easy installation and flexible processability impressed me. We really liked how easily it is to bend corners. Even upon closer inspection, no cutting edges around the windows or in the corners of the house are visible, so nothing disrupts the overall impression of the building.”

Bonded Facade Panels

Aluminum facade panels were mounted on a ventilated facade structure. This is a fully-fledged and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional thermal insulation. “After the walls were bricked, and the thermal insulation layers were installed, an aluminum 'HUT profile' is mounted, which ensures a unique optics of open yet tight joints during the subsequent installation of the composite panels,” describes the facade installation Kronthaler. The unique character of this facade installation lies precisely in the bonding system. “Facade composite panels are usually riveted or screwed. However, Mr. Aberer chose a slightly more expensive option, which is bonding. This also allows for a practically ‘invisible’ installation, which has recently gained significant popularity among our customers. It is understandable, because when screws and rivets are not visible, the entire building has a beautiful and clean impression and stands out better,” continues Kronthaler.

Best-Selling Roofing Product
The roof, measuring 250 m2, was also covered with a PREFA product. The classic folded tile, the best-selling product among small formats, was chosen. With a weight of only 2.3 kg/m2, it is one of the lightest yet also one of the most unstable roofing materials available. The 40-year warranty provided for it covers damages caused by natural factors, such as breakage, corrosion, and frost. The folded tiles of PREFA on the family house in Hohenems, which were installed on full boarding, enchant with their unique appearance in the color of anthracite stucco. The installation was carried out by the roofing company Markus Hörburger. “We are proud of the perfect implementation of this project, which we achieved by choosing a complete range of PREFA products, from the roof and drainage system to the facade,” concludes Harald Kronthaler.

Builder's Perspective

“I chose PREFA roofing and facade products because they are both visually very attractive and additionally represent a uniform and functional system. When installing the facade panels, it was very important how light these panels are. The installation itself was done by only two workers, although usually twice as many are needed. Bending corners, where there are no visible cutting edges, was also a novelty for me. However, I consider it most important that the overall appearance of the building absolutely fulfilled all my expectations,” comments Marc Aberer, Innen-/Trockenausbau, Altbausanierungen.
