Architectural Concept

Architects from AW Architects, a renowned studio based in Christchurch, designed the house as a modern bungalow responding to the narrow and elongated shape of the plot. The building stands on an elevated base due to the floodplain, yet remains in natural contact with the street. The house fits seamlessly into the surrounding development – combining simplicity, functionality, and the lightness of modern living.

The layout is based on a linear arrangement of rooms oriented to the northeast, ensuring ample daylight throughout the day. The living spaces flow smoothly onto a wooden terrace with seating, from where access to the pool at the back of the property is provided. The interior consists of an open space kitchen, dining area, and living room, complemented by two bedrooms and a practical garage, whose doors are elegantly hidden in the facade cladding.

Combination of Natural Materials

The exterior of the house is an example of a harmonious combination of natural and modern materials, which together create a pleasant and durable expression of the building.

• The facade combines fiber-cement panels in a subtle gray tone with thermally treated wood and cedar cladding, which develops a natural patina over time.
• The steel roof withstands the harsh conditions of the coastal environment, while the fiber-cement panels provide long-lasting durability and minimal maintenance requirements.
• The system of prefabricated panels with integrated vapor barrier and exterior membrane contributes to excellent thermal insulation and low-energy operation of the house.
