The introductory event of the Active House Award competition, whose theme this year is Rethink Suburbs, was attended by more than 50 students from four European countries.

Students of architecture from four different countries – Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia – visited Wolkersdorf Castle in the Austrian municipality of Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel. They gathered here to familiarize themselves with the competition brief for the Active House Award firsthand.

More than 50 architecture students met with representatives from VELUX at the international accompanying event of the Active House Award competition. The aim of the event was to inform students about the details of the brief, explain the principles of active houses, and substantiate the theory with real examples. In this year's competition, students will be tasked with designing the renovation of a family house located directly in the municipality of Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel. Future professionals are to clarify the new possibilities for utilizing the current settlement structure through this specific example, basing their designs on the rules of the active house.

Active House in Detail

The opening of the series of lectures was given by the mayor of the municipality, Anne Steindl. She expressed hope that the competition would inspire representatives of the municipality in addressing its development. In addition, she hopes that the competition will produce exemplary cases of renovation of existing buildings. Heinz Hackl (VELUX Austria) and architect Klára Bukolská (VELUX Czech Republic) then spoke about the fundamental principles of the competition and their expectations. Dr. Peter Holzer from the Institute of Building Research & Innovation discussed the key assumptions of an active house – energy efficiency, comfort, and health.

Students were introduced to several case studies. Austrian architect Volker Dienst spoke about active standards and illustrated his presentation with a similar example. His project was realized in the Austrian municipality of Willendorf and is known as Venus's Garden. Norbert Obršál, the winner of last year's Active House Award competition from the Faculty of Architecture at the Brno University of Technology, also spoke about his project, the Inventory of the Archetype. Heinz Hackl presented another realization, which was a renovation project in Brussels – RenovActive.

Christina Brunner (VELUX Austria) spoke about daylight and how it serves as a catalyst for change. After a brief discussion, students moved to the house whose renovation is this year's competition brief. This allowed students to see the building firsthand and ask questions to the representatives concerning the preparation of the brief.

Students Particularly Appreciated the Examples of Real Projects
The introductory event gathered students from four different countries. Some students from the Faculty of Architecture at the Slovak University of Technology had the opportunity to choose this competition as part of their term project. They found the lectures useful: “I looked through the materials about the competition before the event and came here with a certain idea. Now I have a better overview of the brief and expectations. The meeting guided me,” says Tatiana, a fifth-year student at the FA STU. Her classmate Veronika, on the other hand, gained a rough idea only on-site. “I hadn't thought much about the brief yet. I wanted to see it first.” Both particularly appreciated the case studies of real projects.

The organizers were also satisfied with the course of the event: “We were very pleased with the interest of students from the Czech Republic and Slovakia in this international competition, and of course, we wish them luck. I would like to emphasize that the purpose of the competition is not only to design the renovation of one specific house, but we are also searching for a model solution for this type of building, which is typical in our municipalities as well. We would therefore like to foster a broader debate within this competition on how to work with the development and renewal of municipalities on a larger scale,” adds Klára Bukolská from VELUX.

Students can continue to register for the Active House Award competition, with submission of competition entries required by June 30, 2016.
