A modern family house stands on the outskirts of the village of Plav, 7 km from České Budějovice. It is built on a relatively narrow plot of 700 m2, which slopes to the west and offers a highly sought-after view of Mount Kleť in the area. “We were not afraid to take the shape of the plot into account in the design of the house and to take advantage of its unique location. We tried to create a pleasant, functional house that would blend into the landscape while also utilizing all available modern housing technologies,” says the project's architect Ing. Josef Vostracký.

Architectural Solution

The owners of the family house requested the creation of a modern and spacious home for a two-member family that would also allow for comfortable living for frequent guests. They quickly agreed with the architect on the solution for the entire structure, including a complete interior design proposal. The planning was undertaken from the start with the most modern technologies currently used for this type of building.

The house is two-storied, with the main living area on the first floor, where the garage space and main entrance are also located. The basement houses technical rooms, storage, and an outdoor kitchen. The first floor also features a spacious terrace, which can be pleasantly protected from the west with glass and shading. Additionally, it is possible to access the terrace or directly to the lawn from each room, which gently slopes around the entire building. An interesting feature is the complete absence of an internal staircase in the structure. The total living area is 150 m2. “I don’t like creating boxes with holes for windows, but I strive to create pleasant living spaces" comments the architect on the resulting solution of the building.

Technical Solution

The load-bearing structure of the house consists of 25 cm of masonry, which is insulated with 22 cm of mineral wool in a double wooden frame. The visual layer of the façade is made up of Cembrit Patina 020 façade boards, which are anchored using screws onto a wooden base frame. Fiber cement façade boards are an ideal solution for lightweight ventilated façades of this type.

Unlike thermal insulation covered with plaster, a ventilated façade has several advantages. The ventilated gap allows air to rise naturally. During the summer months, this natural movement reduces the overheating of the interior. Conversely, in the cooler part of the year, this air movement decreases moisture condensation from the interior within the layers of insulation. Another significant advantage is the attenuation of noise coming from the outside environment into the house. The combination of soft insulation and the solid material of the façade boards, together with the air gap, is acoustically the most suitable solution.

When designing a ventilated façade, it is essential that the vertical ventilated gap has a minimum continuous thickness of 25 mm. This ensures the correct function of the chimney effect. Air is drawn in at the bottom of the façade, and at the top edge, it exits again. The passage of air must also be ensured under window sills, in lintels, at the parapet, and at the base.

Cembrit Patina Façade Boards

Cembrit Patina is a solid façade board with an authentic natural appearance, emphasized by subtle variations in shade across the surface of the board, creating various light reflections on the façade and approaching that of a purely natural material even more closely. Throughout its life, these slight nuances develop according to how the surface naturally ages. The manufacturing process of the colored boards provides a unique surface finish that makes them resistant to external moisture and dirt. The composition of the board guarantees a long-lasting and durable façade.
Cembrit Patina façade boards are available in 11 subtle color shades. They are intended for the final layer of ventilated façades, cladding of cornices, columns, ceilings, etc. Their use is not limited to exteriors, as their excellent mechanical properties also apply in interior settings.

Fiber cement boards can be very effectively combined with other natural materials such as wood or stone due to their properties. In this case, a combination with slats made of oiled larch was used.
The wide palette of board colors offers nearly limitless possibilities for inspiration. Façade boards can be easily formatted, so the architect's imagination is not restricted in any way. The boards are very easy to handle, and adapting them to your ideas is surprisingly simple.
