The VELUX brand assortment expands with a new triple-glazed roof window and premium benefits at an affordable price. The thermal insulation parameters of the new product meet the stricter requirements of building legislation after 2020. Sound insulation has also improved, along with the ability to reduce noise from rain; the fourth benefit is a special self-cleaning layer that facilitates maintenance. The new roof window raises the bar for quality in the affordable Standard Plus category.
Made for Sustainable Construction
VELUX sets a new standard for products for modern and sustainable construction once again. It responds to the stricter demands of not only Czech legislation and introduces an energy-efficient window with better sound insulation. The new product allows the installation of a larger number of roof windows, thus meeting the demands for more uniform daylighting brought about by the standard ČSN EN 170037:2019 Daylight in Buildings. The year 2020 has long been seen as a turning point in sustainability and thermal protection of buildings. Along with the tightening of noise maps, there is an overall increase in requirements for roof windows. The new VELUX roof window achieves Uw = 1.0 W/m²K, and with recessed installation, it achieves Uw = 0.94 W/m²K, while still being available at an affordable price.
Higher Thermal and Sound Insulation
The improved parameters of the new window are due to specially modified triple glazing. The new glazing 64 has individual pane thickness of 6-3-4 mm, a more advanced low-emission layer V11, and an improved thermoplastic spacer SAG (TPS). Argon was used as the inter-pane gas. The result is a level of thermal insulation that until now was only achieved by premium VELUX glazing.
The thickness of the glass and their arrangement are also important for acoustic comfort. Glass panes of different thicknesses absorb noise of various frequencies more effectively. The sound insulation value of the new window has increased to Rw = 35 dB. Compared to the previous generation of affordable triple glazing – glazing 61 with Rw = 32 dB – the noise reduction from the outside environment has nearly doubled. Better sound insulation is also evident in the third benefit – noise reduction from rain.
Self-Cleaning Layer
The fourth benefit of the new window is easy maintenance. The outer glass is equipped with a self-cleaning N2 layer that is just 10 microns thick. This special washable coating is activated on the roof by sunlight and rain, and once activated, it works permanently. When it rains, droplets create a uniform layer and not only slide off the glass but also take dirt with them.
Eco-Friendly Packaging
The new window will be delivered in 100% recyclable packaging, which other VELUX products will gradually transition to as well. The shift to the new packaging method is one of the steps VELUX intends to take to fulfill its global commitment: By 2041, on the 100th anniversary of its founding, it has committed to achieving lifetime carbon neutrality, as the first company in construction. The goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of products by 50%, notably through more environmentally friendly packaging and transportation. At the same time, VELUX aims to eliminate its historical carbon footprint. In practice, this involves capturing 5.6 million tons of CO2, which corresponds to VELUX's carbon emissions from 1941 to 2041. This will be captured through reforestation and biodiversity projects, in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Available from January 1, 2021
The window with the new glazing will be available in all standard sizes, in fully wooden and maintenance-free options, with both top and bottom operation. From an installation perspective, nothing changes; the window is ready for standard and recessed installation and is compatible with VELUX installation accessories. The new window can be complemented with an electric or solar-powered motor and operated remotely. Subsequently, it can also be connected to the intelligent system for controlling a healthy indoor environment VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO or a smart home. The window is compatible with all indoor and outdoor VELUX accessories.
The new product is a response to tightening legislation, current challenges of today, and the most common demands of customers. It also represents another milestone in the development of VELUX roof windows. Although the Danish brand has been offering triple glazing for a whole decade, it was only the price reduction in 2017 that brought a breakthrough in demand. Over the last three years, the share of triple glazing in VELUX window sales has increased from 15% to 80%. The new glazing 64 aims to further accelerate this process and enable customers to acquire a higher-category roof window, thereby contributing to the higher quality of buildings.
