Brno's Žabovřesky has a giant frog with a fountain in the park on Bráfova Street

Brno – The giant metal frog with a fountain has adorned the park on Bráfova Street in the Brno district of Žabovřesky since today. It replaced an older and non-functional plastic sculpture with a water element, similar to which it draws water from the local artesian well. The new sculpture, created by artist blacksmith Robert Vašín, was unveiled today by the district mayor Filip Leder (KDU-ČSL).

"For some time, I've been nurturing the idea of returning the original atmosphere to this place. After all, not everyone has an artesian well, and the frog motif fits wonderfully with the water. Frog croaks are, after all, inseparable from our district," said Leder. The district paid 170,000 crowns for the metal frog and the restoration of the fountain.

The frog motif refers to the name of the district, but also to the nearby Žabovřesky meadows, where wetlands were once densely populated by frogs and other amphibians.

The park on Bráfova Street was constructed by the district in 1994, and a year later, an artistic installation by artist Jan Šimek was added, which utilized water from the artesian well. It took the form of a stone from which water flowed. However, over time and due to vandalism, the water stopped flowing, and only a dry bed remained. Now a metal frog has been added to the top of the stone.

The new frog fountain serves solely as a decorative element; water from the well is not intended for drinking due to increased iron content.
