At the cemetery in Litomyšl, the construction of a columbarium will begin for nearly six million crowns

Litomyšl – This month, a columbarium for storing funeral urns will begin construction at the municipal cemetery in Litomyšl. The project, which costs nearly six million crowns, also includes the renovation of the scattering meadow. Everything should be completed in the second half of next year, possibly earlier, Mayor Daniel Brýdl (Generace 89) told reporters today.

The columbarium will be located in the area near the scattering meadow between the new cemetery facilities and the Church of St. Anna. The design of the building, made of exposed concrete and corten steel, is by the architectural firm Kuba and Pilař. The construction will form a cohesive unit with the cemetery facilities and will adhere to its current appearance.

The columbarium will contain nearly 250 niches, with each one accommodating two urns. The project also includes the renovation of the scattering meadow, where the ashes of the deceased are placed by scattering into a dug-out pit in the ground that has a specific designation. The space will also preserve the sculpture of Reconciliation by Olbram Zoubek.

The city has no plans to expand the cemetery, as it is sufficient for current needs, according to Brýdl. The construction will bring temporary restrictions for visitors, as the construction site will be fenced off and construction equipment may move through parts of the cemetery. Access to the scattering meadow will not be possible for a certain period.
