Třebíč – The main building of the Třebíč municipal library will be open to the public from Monday after a reconstruction costing nearly 20 million Czech crowns. An important part of the refurbishment of the building on Hasskova Street was the replacement and insulation of the roof and new data wiring. Thanks to these improvements, the library was able to implement modern technologies, including a self-service borrowing system, said library director Marie Dočkalová to ČTK. This afternoon's program was dedicated to the ceremonial opening of the library, which will start lending books on Monday.

"Our goal was to reconstruct the library not only visually but also technologically. By renovating the data networks, we were able to afford to implement an RFID system for collection protection. This further enables, for example, the introduction of self-check machines, which are computers where people – readers can serve themselves," said Dočkalová. The library will use radio frequency identification chips (RFID) for lending books and protecting them from theft. Therefore, it had to equip all 120,000 copies it has in the building with them.

The reconstruction was the most extensive since 1993. It included roof insulation, replacement of windows and doors, floor restoration, partial replacement of electrical installations, construction of barrier-free access in the interior, and barrier-free restrooms.

A significant change involves the brightened interiors that were created by tearing down several partitions dividing the adult sections. In the children's section, located in the attic, there is now air conditioning, which will help maintain a comfortable temperature during hot months.

The Třebíč municipal library also has branches on Modřínová and Okružní streets. All will be gradually reconstructed. The total costs will be about 55 million crowns. The city hall obtained a grant from the Integrated Regional Operational Program, which will cover 85 percent of the costs.

By March, the branch on Okružní Street should be completed, where work began last December. The total costs for modifying the library and establishing an elevator to the first floor are over three million crowns. In May, the library on Modřínová Street is expected to begin reconstruction. Its book collection will temporarily be taken over by the branch on Okružní Street, and books for children from that branch will be loaned at the Základní škola Na Kopcích during the reconstruction. The library on Modřínová Street could be opened in September 2026.

The Třebíč library was established in 1885. Its book collection consists of about 175,000 volumes, and according to Dočkalová, there are approximately 6,500 registered readers.
