The collective of Olomouc galleries and exhibition spaces has prepared a joint program this year dedicated to contemporary Hungarian art. On Thursday, June 25, the opening evening will connect eight exhibitions, a concert, and a parade through the city. The exhibitions will then remain open throughout the summer, transforming Olomouc into a map of the contemporary Budapest art scene.
Under the title XY 2026: Budapest in Olomouc, this year's 11th edition of the XY exhibition of contemporary art will showcase exhibitions with walks, guided tours of the vernissages featuring the work of authors associated with one of the most vibrant art scenes in contemporary Central Europe.
The selection of Budapest stems from the significant position of contemporary Hungarian art in Central Europe as well as the conditions in which the local independent scene has evolved in recent years. In an environment of strongly centralized cultural policy, part of the progressive work has shifted to independent initiatives, international networks, private galleries, and foreign exhibition projects. The presentation of Hungarian artists in Olomouc is therefore not just a cultural exchange but also an opportunity to observe how art responds to changes in public space, memory, identity, tradition, technology, and political imagination. Many of the artists and institutions represented in this year's program are part of the players who have been creating space for independent art outside the state cultural infrastructure in recent years.
The exhibitions touch on collective memory, public space, the relationship to tradition, media, technologies, and current social issues.

The program does not end with the opening evening on June 25. Most exhibitions will be accessible until August and September, remaining part of the city's summer cultural program throughout the holidays.
