The underground of the Vegetable Market (current state)
Brno - Brno's city councilors today again postponed the decision on the garages beneath the Vegetable Market. A private developer wants to build them there, while thousands of people have opposed it in a petition. According to them, the construction would devalue the appearance of the square and endanger the historical underground cellars as well as the Baroque fountain Parnas. The city council opposition intended to definitively reject the project today. The item on the agenda was proposed by Irena Matonohová (TOP 09). However, the coalition parties ČSSD and ODS did not support the inclusion of the item in the meeting's agenda. Thus, the councilors did not discuss it. According to the statement made on Monday by the chairman of the ODS council club, Libor Šťástka, the coalition will likely want to vote on the proposal in January. The city councilors reportedly now have a risk study of the construction available. They should discuss it on Wednesday. "We will wait for this report, and if not all risks are eliminated, we will not support the garages," Šťástka stated. A councilor reportedly suspects that the material will not eliminate all risks, and therefore did not give the project much chance for approval in the city council. However, he rejected "spontaneous voting without a technical report." The public expressed opposition to the proposal at today's meeting. Matěj Hollan said that the opponents will likely need to gather another petition to force the councilors to address the matter. "You are breaking into open doors," the mayor told him. They reportedly agree within the coalition but want to discuss the item first at a council meeting. The construction had already been previously rejected by the Scientific Council of the Director of the National Heritage Institute, Naděžda Goryczková. The proposal was supported in the past by city councilors - they agreed to the expedited zoning procedure. According to today's statement from Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD), the city council should revoke this decision at the meeting on Wednesday.
