Pardubice - The repairs of the Green Gate in Pardubice will be completed by the end of April. Scaffolding is gradually disappearing from the city’s landmark. The construction company repaired the masonry, filled in the joints, reinforced damaged parts of the structure, and restored historical details such as city coats of arms and heraldic decorations, the city hall stated in a press release.
"From the very beginning, it was clear that this would not be a simple repair, but a demanding and sensitive reconstruction of a historical monument. Therefore, a team of experts, staticians, restorers, and heritage conservationists has been involved throughout the restoration," said Mayor Jan Nadrchal (ANO).
Workers are now finishing the plastering between the tower and the foregate. On the facade of the foregate, they used a traditional historical technique called intonaco. This involves a very thin layer of lime plaster applied to a still fresh substrate so that the underlying layer slightly shows through. As a result, a uniform white surface does not form, but rather a surface with natural depth and fine texture, which can resemble marble, for example.
"This technique has been used since the Middle Ages, both in interiors and on facades. Its aim was not to create a perfectly smooth and monochromatic surface, but rather a lively and artistically conceived appearance that better corresponds to historical buildings," said Deputy Mayor Jan Hrabal (ANO).
The repairs of the Green Gate began last November and amount to nearly 42 million crowns; the city increased the budget during construction because the masonry in the lower part was in poor condition due to bulges. The original cost was supposed to be 30 million crowns.
The gate was built in the 16th century as part of the city walls. It is an example of Renaissance architecture and is a symbol of the city. It offers a viewing terrace with a panoramic view of the historic center and the surrounding landscape.
