The ceremonial hall in the premises of the Nový Jičín town hall is a place of the most significant life events, whether it is welcoming newborns, celebrating marriages, or other important gatherings. The hall is regularly filled with the most joyful emotions. However, its appearance from the late sixties of the last century has ceased to meet the demands placed on a contemporary significant representative space. Therefore, the city commissioned three architectural studios to develop a study for its new design. Our proposal was subsequently selected for implementation.
The new appearance of the hall, vestibule, and adjacent facilities is intentionally modest so that it primarily serves as a dignified backdrop for the events themselves. We preserved the original layout of the hall – given its orientation and proportions, the position of the altar along the longer side is logical, and if not entirely ideal, then at least the best possible. We unified the flooring throughout the room to one height by removing the step under the altar, which will undoubtedly contribute to the usability for a more diverse range of occasions than was previously possible. With several minor spatial interventions, we achieved the enlargement and brightening of the vestibule, where several offices were originally installed. We standardized all main spaces with a painting featuring a discreet hand-painted ermine pattern and a precisely crafted wooden floor, which replaced the originally cold-looking marble tiles. We preserved elements with quality and timeless details – primarily chandeliers, wall lights, and doors. These were carefully refurbished and complemented with new locksmith and carpentry products. New circular handles were added to the original doors, new brass grilles were inserted below the window sills, and the altar itself is also new. The new elements intertwine a motif of interconnected circles, characteristic of the events that will take place here.
