The subject of the design and realization is the reconstruction of a 2+kk apartment for a family with two children. The total size was increased to 3.5+kk by utilizing the adjacent space, originally used for the ash dump of the boiler room. The purity of the layout was also complicated by the large chimney body. The original intention was to remove the chimney from inside the apartments; however, due to the complicated technical solution, demolition was not realized. Despite sufficient floor area, it was already a question during the study phase whether it would be possible to design the layout with a satisfactory result. A major motivation was the clients' satisfaction with the apartment's location in the city and the building, as well as the views of the surroundings. From a large number of floor plan variations, a solution was chosen that prioritizes the family’s shared life at the dining table and kitchen. The traditional living room is minimized to a TV room in a small hall between the children's room and the bedroom. The main drawback of the apartment was used as one of the two central motifs of the design. The chimney body and the mass of the bathroom – two prominent cubes in the open space of the kitchen, dining room, and hallway were clad in oak veneer, which softened their hardness. The wall cladding also offers an immediate touch with wood. The second central motif of the design is the framing of window openings in the combined kitchen and dining room. This element arose from the clients' request for a "hearth," a place where dad or the whole family could comfortably settle. It connects the kitchen and dining room, work and rest, framing the view of Petrov. Thanks to the clients for their inspiring contribution to the design and especially the realization itself.
