Reconstruction of a 3+1 apartment into a studio apartment

Reconstruction of a 3+1 apartment into a studio apartment
The reconstruction of this apartment began rather inconspicuously. The owner wanted advice on where to place a foosball table. This innocent question to the architect ended up leading to a complete renovation of almost the entire apartment.
The apartment is located on the first floor of a pre-war building in the center of Ostrava with a view over a quiet park. Its original layout – a pass-through hallway, two small west-facing rooms, a maid's room, etc. – would probably not suit anyone today. Although the apartment allowed for many new layout solutions, the investor ultimately decided on one spacious living room with a view of the park and a bedroom facing the courtyard.
The living room is divided into four functional zones. The first, the kitchen and dining area, was only supplemented with a new table and chairs – at the investor's request, the original kitchen cabinetry was retained, merely recessed into a newly created niche. The second zone is designated for relaxation and watching TV. The third zone, serving as a study, can significantly influence the space through the interplay of retractable sheer and opaque curtains. The opaque black curtain allows for maximum privacy for work, while the sheer softly divides the space. This part separates the second zone from the fourth, which serves as a library and reading area. The shelves in the library can be rearranged and moved according to the positioned books and other items. The future armchair will have pleasant diffused light due to the northeast orientation of the window.
The new layout of the apartment required the demolition of partitions and subsequent leveling of the floors. The original inlaid floor was replaced with a new one in the same style – parquet laid in square patterns. The flooring in the hallway and restroom was replaced with gray marmoleum (replacing the originally intended decorative cement screed).
To level the ceilings, walls, and create niches, drywall construction was used. The classic surface finish and white paint are enlivened in places by green Venetian stucco with slightly golden reflections. The hallway and all zones of the living space are connected by cladding made of silver-colored lacquered glass.
The original wooden doors, painted white and with stained glass, were retained in their places, with only the old windows being replaced. The white lacquer appears again in the new concept of the apartment on the radiator covers and on the furniture in the living area and hallway. The radiator covers are everywhere designed as plates with various cuts, except in the hallway, where more functionality was needed. This place required not just a cover for the radiator but also storage for currently used shoes and seating for putting them on. Therefore, a bench made of wooden slats was designed here, which supports air circulation.
