Only by respecting the uniqueness of each project's conditions can architecture arise. Strong, functional, balanced. Appropriate to the place and the individuality of the client. An original, the result of a dialogue among three parties - the client, the architect, and the location.
At the time of its inception, there was one apartment on the first floor of a Art Nouveau apartment building. During the era of communism, it was brutally and insensitively divided into three units. The client purchased these three fragments and set a simple task: to recreate one functioning whole, a contemporary living space in symbiosis with the original core.
The goal of the concept was to preserve the valuable parts of the historical original and with minimal intervention create a new high-quality living environment on the threshold of the contemporary and the past. A simple spatial adjustment made it possible to achieve modern living standards throughout the apartment. Each part of the existing construction is utilized for a different function. The quiet areas - bedrooms and rooms with their intimacy - are oriented to the east. In the middle, a solid service "motor" anchors the space, containing bathrooms, toilets, a technical room, and an all-connecting wooden entrance hall. In the western part, the demolition of three rooms into one generous living space allows for the insertion of a new independent spatial structure - the Snake.
The Snake flows through the Art Nouveau shell, allowing it to breathe and giving rise to semi-connected subspaces and micro-worlds with its semi-transparent body. The steel skeleton encased in sandblasted plexiglass contains all the necessary functions - kitchen, seating area, storage spaces, complete lighting, refrigerator, wine cellar, electrical, water, and air conditioning distributions, sliding walls to separate the area with the television for a separate home cinema... Because of this, it was almost unnecessary to intervene during the reconstruction into the walls, wooden panels, and ceilings with beautiful craftsmanship details.
The overall mood changes with the time of day and year depending on how light falls upon the object, how much penetrates further or reflects, and where and how the snake is filled. As one moves through the space, impressions also change - various views continuously open and close, light moods alternate, and both height and plan relationships change. The entity from the present thus levitates in the midst of the historical context, creating a synergistic whole with it.
