Residential complex Urban Residence by Compass Architects, located in the broader center of Bratislava between the Filiálka station and Račianska street, offered an ideal combination of spatial comfort and city life with good accessibility to services for a young family. They chose a mezzanine roof apartment with a spacious terrace in the tower apartment building for their new home. The originally rationally designed layout required only minor construction interventions, which consisted of the partial removal of existing partitions and the creation of a roof skylight in the main entrance area of the upper floor, bringing about an overall simplification and brightening of the layout. The interior spaces are operationally divided into three basic units. The smaller part of the apartment, located on the 11th floor, represents a functional unit that includes the owner's private study, a guest room, and service/storage areas. From the hall visually separating the study and the guest room, one can reach the sleeping area through a slender metal spiral staircase. Here, there is a separate wing for the parents' bedroom with its own bathroom, and on the opposite side, two children's rooms with direct access to the outdoors. The center of family life is also the open living area on the 12th floor, which is in direct contact with the terrace. Its unique views of the urban and natural scenery of Bratislava, combined with the possibility of creating the atmosphere and functionality of a family house garden, were one of the decisive determinants of not only the interior design itself but also the choice of the apartment. Just like the interior, this roof garden is functionally divided into several independent units. The summer kitchen with a grill and seating, in direct contact with the living room and dining room, provides ideal conditions for private gatherings with family and friends. Following it is a private wellness area for the owners with a hot tub and a separate Finnish sauna structure custom-made by Ark Shelter. The construction of the rear roof of the sauna with a shower directly adjacent to the children's rooms creates a sort of play zone where children can come up with their own outdoor activities. The entire exterior area is surrounded by greenery for aesthetic and safety reasons, which also affects the views from the interior. The material and color scheme of the interior is primarily composed of natural materials such as beige-gray terrazzo flooring, noble plaster finishes, and ash wood. These are subtly accented by black furniture pieces that refer to the color of the window and facade frames used throughout the apartment building. From a functional and artistic perspective, the main goal of the design was to create a simple, visually unpretentious, yet materially high-quality and timeless space for urban-family living.
