Vault 42 is a vision of a shared workspace inscribed in an almost untouched neoclassical building of military bakeries. Inside the walls of the ancient Olomouc fortress, a few dozen meters from St. Wenceslas Cathedral, the exposed walls of the massive structure loom. More than two hundred-year-old bricks are now covered by fresh ivy foliage. The two-story horseshoe shape with a high gabled roof surrounds a peaceful, stone-paved courtyard. Shadows of maples on the white tablecloth, hot tea, the clinking of cutlery, and soup from the local inn. A cocktail of shared offices fills part of the ground floor. Eventually, the worn sandstone stairs climb one more floor up into the elongated bay of the kitchen.
Both floors are heavy, most often carved with vaulted ceilings. The clean white arches, however, absolve the walls of all burdens. Our wish was to do almost nothing here.
The movement of 'vaulters' occurs longitudinally along the inner and outer axis. The inner courtyard spine is shorter and serves everyone. The outer, somewhat narrower, is significantly more discreet and brings a piece of independence to the individual rooms. It reveals a triangular staircase, whose two ancient arms embrace a mirror with the original inner well. In the jukebox of privacy demands, perhaps everyone can find a pair of tones of their 'favorite song.' Although apart from the graceful interludes in the corridors, there are actually only a few hits: the bustling entrance exchange welcomes visitors with a brick curtain that reaches up to the arched ceiling, dividing this space into a bright reception area with seating and a background and a two-level observatory. From here, the world can be directed. To the right from here, behind a strong transverse wall, there is a puddle. A meter-deep hole in the raised spruce floor. A zone of tranquility where the mind can rest and catch a steak of true silence.
To the left of the entrance is the cowork. A parking lot of mobile shells arranged as needed. Here I can hide away and occasionally gaze after a thought. Further to the west, the plan concludes with a generous conference room. Through the window in the facade, one can disappear toward the ramparts of the citadel.
