Country house in Vysočina

Country house in Vysočina
The couple with grown children were looking for a place for a peaceful and comfortable life in the countryside. They found an abandoned farmstead from 1922. The location provides the desired tranquility, complete with a large garden and views of the landscape.
The small estate is shaped like a large U, featuring arched barns in the central part, with the cottage and barn on the sides. In the middle, embraced by both wings, is a semi-open courtyard, protecting the entrance to the house from the local winds, which seldom cease.

During exploration and subsequent construction, it became clear that a significant portion of the structures were in unsatisfactory condition. Part of the cottage was newly built with ceramic blocks and insulated so that the house could be effectively heated with a heat pump. The barn had to be completely demolished and replaced with a new wooden structure.

Nevertheless, we retained the original footprint of the house and only slightly increased the volume of the attic. The right wing (original cottage) continues to be the living center of the house, with a floor in the central part designated for visitors, and the new barn houses mainly technical spaces and facilities.

From the porch, covered by a console of the new connecting corridor, one enters the raised hall through the vestibule, which has a large window above the stairs. Light from it softly reflects off the rounded ceiling made of white planks. Doors from the hall lead into a large living room that occupies the entire footprint of the left wing. The tiled stove with a heated bench divides the living room into a kitchen with a dining area and a relaxation corner with a large window facing the landscape.
Upstairs above the living room is the main bedroom, and in the central wing, along a long hallway, are three smaller bedrooms and a large bathroom.
The new barn is divided into a garage and a wood storage area, with a wooden sala terrena in the back of the house serving as a summer kitchen and a sheltered resting spot.

The garden is largely unfenced and transitions freely into a meadow below the house. In front of the cottage, behind a fence made of slats, is a smaller herb garden, accessible through a full-opening wing in the large window of the living room.
