The City Library in Prague regularly organizes a conference at the beginning of the year that brings inspiring ideas not only to librarians from across the Czech Republic. The conference will take place online on January 17, 2021, from 10:00 to 15:30. Experts on urban development, urban innovation, and the cultural and creative sectors from both Czechia and abroad have accepted the invitation.

Cities are becoming home to an increasing number of people. Currently, over 50 percent of the world's population lives in cities – this symbolic threshold was crossed in 2008. Migration to cities and the growing population present numerous problems and challenges for local governments, the nonprofit sector, businesses, and above all, for everyone living in cities.
In modern cities, the importance of the so-called cultural and creative sector is also growing. This sector operates at the intersection of art, culture, business, and technology, linking profit-making, nonprofit, public, and private entities. Libraries are a natural part of it, not only because they provide access to cultural and intellectual resources for all, regardless of place, time, or social status.
The program of the conference is divided into three blocks. The introductory block will focus on urban innovations that support sustainability in times of significant social challenges (digitalization, climate change, etc.) and the role of the cultural and creative sector in the development of cities and regions. The broader contexts of the topic will be addressed by Zuzana Révészová, a Slovak sociologist working at the Technical University in Košice. Practical experiences will be shared by Zuzana Drhová, deputy director of the Prague Innovation Institute, and project manager Hyb4City Marcel Kraus.
Three contributions in the second block will focus on the participation of city residents as a necessary condition for creating places where people genuinely want to live. The example of the Lithuanian city of Visaginas, which is searching for a new function and meaning after the closure of a nearby nuclear power plant, will be presented by Siarhei Liubimau, co-founder of the Laboratory of Critical Urbanism at the European Humanities University in Vilnius. The benefits of field anthropological research for planning and better engagement of local residents will be presented by social anthropologist Michal Lehečka from the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University, who also leads the Laboratory of Sustainable Urbanism for the AutoMat association. The out-of-Prague context will be offered by Jakub Deml, who, among other experiences, has served as director of the contribution organization Brána Jihlavy, which supports the development of culture and tourism in Jihlava for a year.
The final panel discussion will not only summarize what was said at the conference but will also provide perspectives on the discussed topics from two other experts. The long-time mayor and deputy mayor of Prague 14, now an opposition councilor, Radek Vondra, has accepted the invitation. He will be joined in the discussion by architect and public space enthusiast Štěpán Špoula, who works, among other things, in the Prague Institute for Planning and Development.
The conference will take place on Monday, January 17, 2022, from 10:00 to 15:30. The professional library public can register and follow the conference directly on the Zoom platform. A broadcast will also be available on the YouTube channel of the City Library in Prague.
The conference is free of charge.
