From the Blue Garden to the Blue Forest: 30 Years of Joy in Landscape
Lecture by Sophie Beaudoin, presenting the work of the Canadian studio CCxA. She will discuss selected projects and the design process, from the conceptual phase to final execution. She will also address broader issues that currently shape the field of landscape architecture, including responses to the climate crisis, changing public space usage, and the need for long-term sustainable solutions. Reflection on the thirty years of practice at the office will offer connections between form, content, and the social function of contemporary landscape creation.

CCxA (formerly Claude Cormier + Associés) is a studio founded in 1995 by the prominent and respected landscape architect Claude Cormier. Since 2022, it has been led by Sophie Beaudoin and André L. Fontaine. The studio connects landscape architecture with urbanism, art, and architecture and is distinctive and exceptional in its handling of artificiality and subtle shifts in reality towards the surreal. The team draws from the specific character of a place, its natural conditions, history, social and political contexts, and translates them into designs intended to provoke attention and playful interaction. The result is striking spaces that can define a city's identity and engage passersby.

Sophie Beaudoin has been with the Canadian landscape architecture studio CCxA since 2003 as one of Claude Cormier's first collaborators. With over thirty years of professional experience, she is behind significant projects across Canada, including the renovation and modification of the northern edge of Dorchester Square and the heritage conservation and restoration plan for Place du Canada, the installation The Ring in Montreal, the promenade at the Canadian Museum of History, and the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa, on which the studio collaborated with Studio Daniel Libeskind and which resulted from an architectural competition. She has also contributed to the landscape conceptual design for the new city center of Vaughan built on a greenfield. In Montreal, she regularly lectures, serves on competition juries, and as vice-chair of the Jacques-Viger Expert Committee, she participates in assessing the development, urban planning, and architectural plans of the city where the office is based.

The lecture will be conducted in English.

After the lecture, there will be a special screening of the film Once It Was with the short film Raumschiff Enterprise and the video clip Kotě in the panelák, taking place at 21:00 as part of the Film and Architecture festival. A separate ticket must be purchased for the screening, or a discounted entrance can be obtained by purchasing a package for both events (lecture + screening) as part of the Archivečer program.

The lecture is part of the lifelong learning program of the Czech Chamber of Architects.
