Prague - Six new builds, completions, or reconstructions have been nominated for the Old Prague Club Award for new construction in a historical environment. Among them are two laboratory buildings for large state institutions, a greenhouse in the Kroměříž gardens, and the already awarded World of Technology in Ostrava - Vítkovice. The winner will be announced by the jury on March 23.
Although the Old Prague Club, with its many years of history, predominantly advocates for historical buildings and urban environments, its members claim that contemporary architecture certainly belongs in historical settings. The competition aims to contribute to the dialogue between heritage experts and modern architects.
It recognizes buildings that, according to the club, do not disturb the historical environment, excel in valuable architecture, and cultivate their surroundings. Last year, the Old Prague Club Award was given to the depository of the Regional Gallery in Liberec, which was built next to the local municipal baths. The entire renovation of the baths into a gallery then received the Grand Prix of Architects 2014.
This year, a multi-functional building at Burian Square in Brno Žabovřesky, a kiosk with refreshments in the castle gardens in Jičín, a cultivation greenhouse in the Květná garden in Kroměříž, the World of Technology in Ostrava - Vítkovice, a laboratory building for the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, and the Laboratory Center of the Faculty of Technology at Tomas Bata University in Zlín are nominated.
