Ještěd f kleci or 'JFK – the cult award of Fatula' is a competition for the best student project at the Faculty of Art and Architecture in Liberec. On Thursday, February 4, 2010, the third awarding of the traveling white cast combining Foglar and Hubáček took place in the large studio. Due to the sudden health issues of Eva Jiřičná, the composition of the independent jury was, this time, entirely a male affair. Among the invited jurors was the architecture theorist Cyril Říha, who is one of the spiritual fathers of the inaugural year of JFK from the summer semester of 2005. Other jury members Michal Kuzemenský (my architects) and Radek Šíma (Atelier 6) chose the world-renowned architect John Eisler, whose roots trace back to Liberec's SIAL Kindergarten.
At the beginning, the jurors expressed disappointment that among the dozens of exhibited works, they could not find a laureate deserving of the award for experimentation. Another surprise was that from an external viewpoint, the works exhibited far more common spirit than the heads of individual studios admit.
The jury ultimately awarded Jindřich Traugott in the design category, with Jan Veisser in first place for the house category, followed by Theresa Kjellberg in second, and Bohuslav Strejc in third. In the urbanism category, Kateřina Fryzelková took third place, Jan Vybíral second, and Michal Krejčík first. The studio award was shared between the studios of Prof. Jiří Suchomel and Assoc. Zdeněk Fránek.
The absolute winner and the historically fourth holder of Ještěd f kleci eventually became Michal Krejčík from Prof. Suchomel's studio with the project of a linear skyscraper "Crocodile" in Letná.
Students eager for external reflection will invite an independent jury to Liberec every semester. The award may be devalued to such an extent that in a few years, it will be an exception for anyone who hasn't yet won JFK. However, far more important is that the projects are not gathering dust on shelves, but continue to be discussed at great parties often until morning.
