We warmly invite you to the second round and the ceremonial announcement of the conceptual architectural competition SUPERSTUDIO at the cultural space PRAHA/Fórum for architecture and media, Husova 18, Brno on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 5:30 PM. The team-based two-round student competition takes place non-stop over 24 hours, with the theme being revealed to the participants only at the start of the competition. "The themes understand architecture and urbanism in broader social contexts and perspectives. The format of the competition allows participants to undergo an intensive thinking process in less than thirty hours and gain valuable experience in economical expression and defending their results in front of an audience and a jury," states one of the initiators of the competition, David Neuhäusl. This year's theme was set by Maarten Gielen, the founder of the Brussels collective of architects and designers ROTOR and the recent recipient of the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture for 2015. In line with his professional focus, the task involved a building or part of it designated for demolition. The proposal was to consider new uses of materials or constructions in a new context, operation, and function. Of course, the total costs of the operation should not exceed the benefits. About sixty teams of university students participated in the first round of the competition. The composition of teams is independent of year or school, so besides architecture students, students from other fields (e.g., art, economics, or medicine) also participated. Interest in the competition has been growing every year, which the organizers attribute to the combination of the unique competition concept, original themes, and respected personalities on the jury. "The nationwide final of the best teams from individual cities in front of the public has been the intention since the first year, and each year the format of the competition has come closer to that goal." A total of ten of the best teams from Prague, Brno, Liberec, and Ostrava will present their projects live in the final round in Brno at the cultural space PRAHA before an audience and a professional jury. The jury consists of architectural theorist Monika Mitášová, architect Yvette Vašourková, and architect Michal Palaščák, who will publicly evaluate the proposals and subsequently select and ceremonially announce the winner. The evening will feature a musical performance curated by theater director and musician Matyáš Dlab: a concert by František Chaloupka, who focuses on original compositions straddling avant-garde, experimental, and ambient music. The ceremonial announcement will conclude with a party featuring Nanook Craft + Warren / Dj Set.
