Liberec – In the architectural-urban planning competition for the design of the new medical school in Liberec, the proposal by the Liberec studio of Petr Stolín has won. According to preliminary estimates, the construction costs will exceed half a billion crowns without VAT. By the end of next year, the region should have the project, and construction could begin a year later, the governor Martin Půta (Starostové pro Liberecký kraj) said to journalists today. According to him, the current school does not meet the needs of modern education.

The competition was in two rounds, with 27 applicants, of which only six advanced to the second round. The second place was taken by the proposal from the studio BY architects, and the third by the Prague studio Fenomen Space. "We will negotiate with the absolute winner in August within the negotiation procedure without publication regarding the preparation of the project," the governor added. The region has not yet presented the proposals but can publish them after the fifteen-day period for objections has expired, according to Půta. However, the region plans to display the proposals in the lobby of the regional office in August.

The secondary medical school in Liberec is located in a historic building of the former church school in the city center and in about five other buildings, which are mostly rented. It is already insufficient in capacity. "Given the large investments in regional healthcare, we will also need educated and motivated secondary healthcare staff, and that is why we need a new building with a larger capacity within walking distance of the Liberec Regional Hospital," Půta said. The new school, with a capacity of up to 600 students, should be built to what is known as passive standard.

The school will be built in the school complex on Jablonecká street near the Broumovská housing estate, where a secondary vocational school currently operates. The land provides enough space for further construction. The project, according to the governor, is divided into two phases. "The first phase is the school, including sports facilities connected to the existing complex, and the second phase is the possible construction of a dormitory," he added. According to Půta, the region has also agreed with the company ČEZ on the relocation of the very high voltage lines to provide enough space for the construction.
